Our History

Sandhill Suites

Sandhills Suites was built in 1908 in downtown Burwell, Nebraska on the South side of the Square. The hotel was originally 25 rooms and built to accommodate the bustling economy of the time. It was filled with traveling sales people, cowboys, migrating families, and railroad employees.

Clarence and Vonna Dey purchased the Hotel and adjoining Café at auction in 1990. The hotel needed work as it had set vacant for a year and there were some much needed repairs. Clarence Dey took the 25 room hotel and renovated it into a 10 room apartment building.  Clarence also operated an insurance office out of the front room. It operated as beautiful apartments until the transition back to it’s original hotel state.

Dan Vech, who owns an Insurance company in Ord, purchased the Insurance Company from Clarence and also bought the building.

Tenise Jarecke, the owner of the Sandstone Grill, along with her sister, were telling Dan about the business plan of joining the two businesses. She had always thought the hotel and restaurant should go together. In January of 2018, Dan and Tenise formed a partnership and a plan to renovate the hotel beyond it’s original glory. By April of 2018, they had 4 of the 10 rooms ready for nightly rentals. As of now, four more rooms have since been transformed to the high end boutique look they had envisioned, giving them a total of 8 rooms available.

They restored the original hardwood floors and brought the décor up to date. Each room is furnished with a big screen TV, Queen pull out couch, Kitchenette, and a Queen Size bed in the separate bedroom.

Amenities include free WiFi, Locally brewed Coffee, on street parking and access to dining at Sandstone Grill which is an adjoining building.
